The gate is closed, the house is dark, and the remote does nothing. That is a power-path problem, not a new leaf. Inland San Diego County sees it on public-safety power shutoffs and ordinary outages. Do not force a locked drivetrain. Find the manual release for your operator, or wait for a licensed technician if you cannot.

Manual release first, then power

Most swing and slide operators have a keyed or lever disconnect so you can move the leaf by hand. The location is on the operator housing or behind a lockable cover. It is model-specific. This site does not publish a universal diagram. If you do not know the release, do not pry the leaf. You can break the gearbox and still be stuck.

If a second household remote, a wall button, or the keypad still works, you may have a dead transmitter, not a dead grid. Troubleshooting automatic gate problems is the page for a gate that is alive and misbehaving. This page is the outage.

Battery backup is a manufacturer option on some operators. Runtime is on that model’s sheet. This site has no verified hour-count for a San Diego outage. A solar gate opener keeps a charge on a battery bank from panels. It can keep cycling when the street is dark if the array and the batteries were sized for your cycle count. Shade, old batteries, and a heavy wood pair all shorten that window. Get the sheet for the model you have, or for the model on a replacement bid.

Double-swing pairs may need both leaves released. A slide may roll once the motor is disconnected, or it may still sit on a locked rack. Ask the installer to show you the release on the day they leave, and to write the step in the handover.

If the outage is a wildfire shutoff and the gate is your only vehicle exit, that is also an emergency-access conversation with the fire authority for the parcel. This page does not publish a required driveway width. Confirm the current rule for your zoning.

What to put on a repair or replacement proposal

  • Operator model as found, and whether the release still works.
  • Power: AC only, battery backup, solar-charged, or a mix.
  • Battery age and whether replacement is in scope.
  • Whether the keypad and remotes stay compatible.
  • Safety devices after you have been moving the leaf by hand.
  • A handover: you operate the release once in daylight with the technician watching.

C-13 covers gates and related work. A new utility circuit is often another trade. Write who does which piece. City Table 142-03A and County PDS070 still apply if the job includes new posts or a new height. Civil Code §841 still applies on a shared driveway fence.

Do not treat Business and Professions Code §7048’s $1,000 exemption as an automated-gate service call advertised as contractor work. Verify the license on the CSLB site.
