Staining

Fence staining in San Diego. Prep matters more than paint.

Unsealed cedar turns gray within six months of San Diego sun; unsealed pine cracks by year two. A proper staining job starts with pressure-washing and drying, then sanding any gray or damaged wood, then a penetrating oil-based stain, not a film-forming product that will peel.

What do homeowners ask about Staining?

How often should I stain my wood fence in San Diego?

Every 2–3 years for semi-transparent stain, 3–5 years for solid-color stain. Inland and east county sun fades stain faster, 2-year cycles there. Coastal humidity shortens the cycle too. You'll know it's time when water no longer beads on the wood.

What's the best stain for San Diego fences?

Oil-based penetrating stains like Ready Seal, Defy Extreme, or TWP 1500-series. They soak into the wood, protect from UV and moisture, and never peel because there's no film to peel. Avoid water-based acrylics and anything labeled "paint", they form a film that cracks in sun.

Can I stain a wet fence or a new fence right away?

No on both counts. Stain needs to soak into dry wood. Stain over wet wood gets trapped in the grain and never cures properly. New fences need 30–60 days to acclimate and dry. Pressure-washed fences need 48+ hours before restaining.

Stain or paint a wood fence?

Stain. Paint creates a surface film that cracks, peels, and traps moisture under the film. Wood needs to breathe. Solid-color stains give paint-like color coverage while still letting the wood release moisture. We won't paint a fence, it's not the right product.

Got three quotes for a new cedar fence. Fence Pros was the only company that actually walked the whole line, pulled the HOA spec, and showed me a stain sample before quoting. Clean crew, clean jobsite, beautiful finish.

Cedar Privacy Fence Install Carlsbad

Our 12-year-old fence was leaning bad and I thought we needed a full replacement. They installed steel post inserts on six posts, saved the panels, and the fence looks great for another decade. Saved me thousands.

Fence Post Repair El Cajon

Needed a code-compliant pool fence before our home sale. They came out same-week, quoted honestly, and installed glass panel fencing that passed inspection on the first try. Handled everything, measurement, hardware, final walk-through.
