What composite is (and how it differs from vinyl)
Composite boards are typically recycled wood flour plus polyethylene or polypropylene, plus UV and color additives. The mix is dense. It does not behave like a hollow PVC vinyl panel.
Unlike untreated wood, composite is not food for termites and does not rot the way a pine post does. It still weathers. Color can mellow. A damaged board is often a section swap, not a sand-and-patch. Installation still has to follow the maker’s gapping rules. Fence installation is the contractor’s work, not a Fence Pros crew.
Composite vs vinyl
Vinyl is PVC, often hollow, lighter, and a plastic look unless you buy a wood-grain film. It can chalk or go brittle. Composite is heavier, usually more wood-like in texture, and needs sturdier posts because of weight and wind. Neither is a lifetime warranty because a blog said so.
Sun, salt, and the honest tradeoffs
Fits this climate when: you want less stain labor than cedar, you have termite pressure, and you accept a higher material line. UV inhibitors are why quality lines fade slower than bare wood. “Slower” is not “never.”
Watch:
- Upfront cost vs pine or cedar. Composite usually bids higher. How much is the quote.
- Heat: dense boards can feel hotter than wood in inland July.
- Weight: posts and footings have to match. Santa Ana load on a solid composite face is a sail.
- Expansion: follow the manufacturer’s gaps or boards buckle.
- Repairs: ugly hits mean replacing a panel, not sistering a cedar board.
A hose-off is typical upkeep. That is not “zero maintenance” as a legal claim.
Cost vs wood without a fake 15-year total
Wood (cedar or redwood) usually starts lower and then asks for clean, stain, and board swaps. Composite starts higher and skips the stain cycle if you like the color as it weathers. Whether composite “wins by year 10” depends on what you would have spent on stain and repairs, which we do not know for your yard.
Compare wood vs vinyl if composite is not in the budget. Ask every composite bid for:
- Product line and color code
- Post spec and footing depth
- Fastener and bracket type (especially coastal)
- Expansion gap standard they will follow
- What the manufacturer warranty actually covers (product vs install)
Manufacturer warranties, when they exist, are the brand’s document. They are not Fence Pros’ warranty and not proof of a 25-year local service life.
Styles (without a brand ranking)
Look for interlocking or tongue-and-groove privacy, horizontal contemporary, semi-privacy gaps, and board-on-board or shadowbox profiles that copy wood patterns. Colors run charcoal through cedar tones with embossed grain.
Named decking brands also sell fence lines. Treat Trex, Fiberon, and similar names as product families to identify on the quote, not as a San Diego field test we ran. Bufftech is primarily vinyl; do not assume a vinyl catalog is composite.

Is composite worth it compared to wood?
If you would pay for repeated stain cycles and you want termite-resistant boards, it can be. If you like oiling cedar and want a lower first check, wood can be. No 15-year ROI table here.
Does composite hold up to coastal salt?
The plastic content does not rust. Fasteners still can. Specify stainless or hot-dip hardware near the water the same as you would on wood. See coastal hardware.
How long does a composite fence last?
Until UV, impact, or a failed post ends it. Warranty years on a PDF are not a measured San Diego lifespan.
Do I need a permit?
City of San Diego: building permit at 7 feet and up (Table 142-03A), plus front-yard and visibility height. Unincorporated County: PDS 070 exception for qualifying fences not over 6 feet. Front-yard solid height is often much lower than 6 feet. Permits.
Can composite be a pool fence?
Only if the finished geometry meets Health and Safety Code 115923 (60-inch minimum enclosure height, gaps, gates, latch height, non-climbable outside for a child under five) when you use it as an isolation enclosure. Panel gaps are a product issue. Pool fence.
